TNA Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran yesterday refuted the statement made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa that the TNA has signed an agreement with common opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena.
Sumanthiran also challenged the UPFA to produce whatever proof they have on the issue without making false statements. He added that the TNA was free and independent in making appropriation decisions without outside pressure.
Earlier this week at a presidential rally in Chilaw, Rajapaksa charged that his opposition challenger and former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena had a secret pact with the TNA.
The TNA, which continues to enjoy huge popularity in the Northern Province, has not endorsed a candidate for the January election.
“We will not tell the Tamils who to vote for. We will simply urge them to go out and vote. The people know who to vote for,” Sumanthiran said recently.
Election analysts predict that the minority vote is likely to strongly favour President Rajapaksa’s challenger in the 8 January election. (DB)
