The tea industry has kicked off 2015 with lower sales averages recorded in January, according to Ceylon Tea Brokers Plc. It said the national Tea Sale Averages (TSA) for January amounted to Rs. 424.14 per kilo vis-à-vis Rs. 509.78 in the corresponding month of last year reflecting a dip of Rs. 85.64. High Growns recorded a TSA of Rs. 401.72 as against Rs. 452.75 (-Rs. 51.03) in 2014. Medium Growns recorded Rs. 378.13 vis-à-vis Rs. 452.37 (-Rs. 74.24) in 2014. Low Growns recorded Rs. 441.07 vis-à-vis Rs. 543.67 (-Rs. 102.60) in 2014. “The wide disparity in averages YOY in all elevations especially Low Growns which is lower by over Rs. 100 per kg in January 2015 when compared to the same period last year is due to political instability and the decline of oil prices which has affected most of our main export markets, namely Russia, Iran, Syria, Iraq and Libya,” Ceylon Tea Brokers said.
