Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) has written to Elections Commissioner over alleged use of security forces for work on the upcoming Presidential polls. TISL claimed that as per complaints lodged a handbill bearing President Rajapaksha along with a promotional tag line has already prepared to be posted to all Army officials. “On 2014-12-24 we’ve observed that Army soldiers have been used for the pasting of stamps on these envelopes at the central post offices under the Department of Postal Services. This process is currently ongoing,” TISL Executive Director S. Ranugge has informed Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday. “An amount of Rupees 5.5 million has been paid by the Sri Lanka Army to the Department of Postal Services for this above mentioned operation. These are state owned funds. Additionally the message is both sent and received by state officials this blatant violation of the election law and a severe misuse of public resources. We urge you to immediately order the Post-Master General to halt this illegal operation,” the TISL letter to EC stated.
