Transparency International complains against massive violations of election regulations

Transparency International Sri Lanka has lodged a complaint with the Election Commissioner regarding massive violations of election regulations by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at his inaugural election rally, held last week in Anuradhapura. Transparency International has pointed out that the President had used over 1000 buses of the Sri Lanka Transport Board to transport people from faraway areas to the rally. This has caused immense difficulty for the public and students sitting for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination who had to seek other means of transport due to lack of buses. Transparency International also mentioned in their complaint that the state-owned Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Independent Television Network had broadcast the political rally live, violating election regulations. Independent Television Network alone has spent over Rs. 2 million for this. Transparency International also mentioned that a large number of other violations of election regulations including displaying election propaganda material in public buildings mainly by ruling party candidate President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
