Lanka Bell, the only wholly Sri Lankan telecommunications provider, once again brings good news to its customers in the form of a report by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) which recognises Lanka Bell for having fastest fixed broadband speeds.
This is according to the TRCSL’s broadband speed test results carried out over the last four months, which showed that users of both Lanka Bell’s 512 Kbps and 2 Mbps WiMAX broadband packages enjoyed the fastest available download speeds of all fixed broadband users in the local market.
The company’s broadband customers will also be encouraged to learn the TRCSL’s findings also indicated that, while having the highest download speeds, Lanka Bell’s download speeds were also time after time proven to be the nearest to theoretical download speeds advertised.
This superior performance is no doubt attributable to Lanka Bell’s partnership with FLAG Telecom, a subsidiary of India’s Reliance Communications, which resulted in an infrastructure investment in the terabit-capacity FALCON undersea cable to the tune of US$ 27 million that was commissioned in 2007.
Lanka Bell Managing Director Prasad Samarasinghe said: “Our customers are benefiting in a very real way from a decision we made in 2006 to invest in the then groundbreaking terabit-capacity FALCON undersea cable – a network which is the telecommunications backbone for 87 countries, one of the largest networks in the world. This farsighted investment allowed us to continue offering high speed data and internet access and even superior IDD facilities to several thousand Lanka Bell customers all over the island, even as others falter in their advertised speeds.”
He added: “While we accept the TRCSL’s encouragement, we do not intend to rest on our laurels any time soon. Lanka Bell is already in the midst of an aggressive expansion programme entailing both the size and scope of our top-of-the-line WiMAX broadband services so that every single Sri Lankan can one day benefit from the most affordable means of internet access available.”
The only wholly Sri Lankan-owned company in the telecommunications sector, Lanka Bell is the largest CDMA ‘fixed line’ provider in the country with over 1.2 million subscribers. The company was established in 1997 with an initial investment of US$ 150 million and was the pioneer of CDMA technology in the country.
The company continues to make substantial investments to take its technology and services to all geographic regions and all segments of the market in Sri Lanka and has 60 of its very own fully-fledged business offices islandwide.
