British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, John Rankin, has assured Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa yesterday that the UK would support Sri Lanka in having the European Union’s ban on fish exports from the country lifted according to a statement issued by the Ministry.
The ban came into effect this month following the Fisheries Ministry’s failure to implement recommendations made by the EU Commission in 2012 for establishing a sustainable fisheries industry in the island.
The UK’s support will be extended to Sri Lanka at the EU meeting to be held in March this year.
At the meeting with Minister Rajapaksa, High Commissioner Rankin expressed his appreciation over the steps the Sri Lankan Government is taking to develop the country economically and gave assurances of Britain’s support for such endeavours.
