TNS Lanka islandwide poll in LMD reveals that “the people are piqued by demands to probe the island’s human rights record” Business magazine LMD reports, in its April issue, that “the people are largely in agreement that external parties should not demand HR probes, stating that independent nations can resolve their own issues”. An overwhelming majority of 95% of Sri Lankans spoken to by TNS Lanka “feel that powerful nations have double standards regarding human rights – countries such as the United States are singled out, in this respect,” LMD observes. In addition, at least two-thirds of those who were polled last month – while the UNHRC sessions were in progress – also believe that the Government is taking steps to improve human rights in Sri Lanka, while 23% remain ‘unsure’ if this is the case. According to LMD, “the people say that all communities must be treated equally, political influence should decrease and awareness of HR needs to be built – measures to prevent religious tensions, and harness peace and unity are also advocated.” The April edition of LMD features a story on the future of social media on its cover (the full story is now on LMD’s website – www.LMD.lk).
