The opposition United National Party (UNP) says there are two worlds in Sri Lanka, one which is enjoyed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family and another where the ordinary man lives and suffers. UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera, speaking at an Uva Provincial Council election rally, said that the public are suffering more than they did during the war. He claims that the President and his family as well as their close associates live a luxurious live by eating out at hotels and partying at clubs while others suffer. The UNP MP claimed that some of those close to the President eat hoppers worth Rs. 200 each and purchase expensive clothes and shoes. “It is true, after the war, people can now travel between the North and South. But there are two worlds in Sri Lanka. Only one percent of the Sri Lankan pubic live in Rajapaksa’s world,” he said. Samaraweera says while the President and his family live the good life, people working in the tea estate sector have to fight for a better pay and proper living conditions despite contributing heavily to Sri Lanka’s economy. He said the UNP, under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe, has come forward to ensure equal rights for all Sri Lankans and he urged the public to ensure the UNP wins the Uva polls to achieve that goal.
