A bigger UNP delegation will travel to the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port to inspect the two locations later this week after the first attempt was disrupted by a pro-Government mob.
UNP MP Joseph Michael Perera said that most UNP MPs and provincial members will be part of the delegation scheduled to inspect the port and airport on Saturday.
Perera said that as politicians representing the public, the UNP members have a right to inspect facilities constructed using public funds. Earlier a five-member UNP delegation had come under a mob attack when they attempted to inspect the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port. Perera said that by attacking the UNP MPs, the Government was attempting to send a message saying no one can question transparency when public funds are used on any Government project.
He also said that at the UNP May Day rally on Thursday, the party will look to draw the attention of the Government and the public to six key issues.
Among the issues are salary anomalies for State sector employees, misuse of the Employees’ Provident Fund and Employees’ Trust Fund and the casino issue. (Colombo Gazette)
