Defence Secretary meets Muslim religious and civil leaders
Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has held discussions with leaders of civil and religious Muslim organisations on Monday.
The discussions, reportedly focused on the recent communal clashes in the two Muslim-dominated southern coastal towns, were held behind closed doors and ended with the two sides agreeing to a media embargo, BBC Sandeshaya reported.
Ash-Shaikh Fazil Farook, Media Secretary of All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), which is one of the Muslim organisations that participated in the discussion, said the meeting with the Defence Secretary was cordial.
The ACJU Media Secretary has told BBC Sandeshaya that Muslim and Buddhist people in Sri Lanka have had friendly relations for over 1,000 years, and the ACJU discussed with the Defence Secretary on how to maintain that relationship in future as well.
“We focused on the measures need to be taken in the future for the two communities to live in harmony. This is a forward march. We discussed today how the Muslim community can live in harmony with all other communities without conflicts,” Farook has told BBC.
When BBC Sandeshaya inquired about whether the Aluthgama incidents were taken up at the discussion, the ACJU Media Secretary has said that he was unable to divulge more than what he had already said.
He has reiterated that the discussions were focused on how we should unite as Sri Lankans and as one country, adding that the Defence Secretary ensured the security of the Muslim masses. |
