A group of UNP MPs visited Aluthgama and Dharga Town once again yesterday to get a clearer assessment of the damages and causes for the last week’s armed mobs-led carnage amidst religious tensions.
During their four hour stay, the UNP MPs met with several families affected including those who lost their loved ones, visited damaged houses, shops, met with officials of Buddhist Temples and Muslim Mosques in the area.
Among those who visited were MPs Karu Jayasuriya, Eran Wickramaratne, Ajith Perera and national organiser Daya Gamage. Yesterday’s tour was the second since the last Monday’s violence which led to the death of three persons and extensive damage to houses and shops in the area.
“The visit and what we found out after talking to both communities is very distressing,” said MP Wickramaratne. “With new insights shared it appears a well planned incident rather than a spontaneous reaction by those who participated in the BBS rally,” added Wickramaratne.
The UNP MP emphasised that the Aluthgama incident warrants a credible probe. He welcomed President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decision to appoint a committee to investigate but stressed its composition was key.
