The United National Party (UNP) yesterday revealed the malpractices which took place at SriLankan Airlines during the rule of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and said that necessary measures would be taken against the corrupt individuals linked to these fraudulent activities. UNP Media Spokesman and Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, while addressing the media, said that the thieves and crooks the public had been asking about were exposed in the Board of Inquiry (BOI) report on SriLankan Airlines that was submitted recently. He said that law enforcement and legal authorities would take necessary punitive action against those involved in these fraudulent activities soon. “People are always asking us where the thieves are. So now we are telling them that according to the BOI report these are the thieves responsible for the malpractices at SriLankan Airlines during the previous regime. How the authorities of that period misused public funds is clear from this report. Officials handling criminal investigations will not have any issues with this report,” Kariyawasam added. Although former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has not been directly linked to the misdeeds highlighted by the BOI report, his family, including his sons Namal Rajapaksa and Yoshitha Rajapaksa and his brother-in-law Nishantha Wickramasinghe, who was the former SriLankan Airlines Chairman, have been accused. The BOI report was submitted by a four-member panel headed by anti-corruption advocate J.C Weliamuna.
