The main opposition United National Party says it will push for general or presidential elections next year despite the Government saying such an election will only take place in 2016. Speaking to reporters, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the Opposition, including the JVP, Democratic Party and the Tamil National Alliance, should join forces to topple the Government. He claims the screws of the Government have been loosened and there is now a need for the Opposition to join forces to topple the Government. The UNP Leader however refused to commit to agree on forming a joint Opposition under a common candidate at the next general or presidential elections. He says the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government needs to be removed first and there needs to be a consensus towards that attempt before discussing the next step. (Colombo Gazette)
