The second round of talks between the United National Party triumvirate currently trying to resolve the party’s leadership battle will meet again this evening for discussions aimed at reaching a consensus on the proposed Leadership Council.
The meeting will take place at the Party Leader’s office in Jawatte.
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and MPs Karu Jayasuriya and Sajith Premadasa are expected to discuss the scope and composition of the Leadership Council at this second meeting, the Daily FT learns.
Last week the UNP Leader presented a list of powers that will be delegated to the new Council that party sources indicate will comprise nine members of the party drawn from the senior and newer membership.
The proposal for the Leadership Council which came from the United Bhikku Front, a Buddhist monks’ collective affiliated to the UNP, has called for the new reforms to be decided on within two weeks.
Under the terms of the proposal, Wickremesinghe will be the party’s Senior Leader while Jayasuriya will chair the new Council in which Premadasa will be a member.
