The Working Committee of the United National Party (UNP) yesterday unanimously decided to go for a General Election after 23 April under the present electoral system. UNP Spokesman and Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, told media that while the party wanted the electoral system to change, it felt that Parliament must however be dissolved after 23 April, in keeping with its presidential election promise. Commenting further, Kariyawasam said that since there was not enough time to prepare for an election under a new electoral system, the UNP Working Committee approved the staging of an election under the existing system.
