  • Alleges CB Chief Mahendran yet to be questioned by Financial Crime unit over T-Bond fiasco

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday accused the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) of being politically motivated and pointed out that this was the reason behind the Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran still not being summoned to the FCID over the controversial Treasury Bond issue.

MP Bandula Gunawardane at a media conference held yesterday accused the

FCID of picking and choosing its victims and the Cabinet Subcommittee headed by the Prime Minister of being behind this drama.

“The FCID is summoning those who are alleged to have committed crimes years ago but seems adamant not to take action against Mahendran over the controversial bond issue.

This is the biggest act of corruption to have taken place in recent times but the FCID has still not summoned him,” Gunawardane said.

MP G.L. Peiris, who was also present at the media briefing, said that they were not opposed to the investigations looking into corruption and fraud allegations in any way but instead were only against favouritism when it came to taking action against certain individuals.

“However, six UPFA MPs including former cabinet ministers would brief the Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) about Mahendran and his involvement in the sale of CB bonds,” Peiris added.
