Taking a dismissive stance on the tragic death of three youth in Weliweriya allegedly shot by the Army, External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris was adamant that it would have no effect on the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Responding to questions over the international community expressing concern over the deaths the Minister insisted that the Government was doing all that it could and expressed confidence that no heads of State would be dissuaded from attending CHOGM by the incident. “Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva making a statement in Parliament on Tuesday on behalf of the Government has clearly stated that an independent investigation will be held. Incidents of this nature are part and parcel of life.” He went on to say that in previous visits foreign delegations had been impressed by the progress made in Sri Lanka and CHOGM attendees would also likely follow suit.
