A senior Government member has been given a house by Ceylinco, the same company that featured prominently in the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake said yesterday.
The UNP MP, who declined to mention names but said the Government Minister in question should come forward with the admission, said the house was located in Kurunegala, in front of the Athgal Viharaya. “The address is 90/174 Colombo Road, Kurunegala,” Karunanayake told a media briefing. Karunanayake said it was ludicrous that given these conflicts of interest, these same PSC members found the Chief Justice of the country corrupt for using a legal power of attorney granted by her sister to purchase a home for them in
Sri Lanka.
“How can these people with vested interest pass judgment on her?” the UNP MP charged.
Addressing the press briefing on a different issue, Karunanayake said the Government was deliberating understating the numbers of people affected by the floods.
“Disaster Management is saying the number is 450,000, when we know the actual number is close to a million. The Government is underplaying this so that the disaster doesn’t affect tourism numbers to the country,” he said.
Karunanayake added that the Government had allocated a meagre Rs. 150 million for flood relief, when it thought nothing of spending Rs. 350 million on the Night Races and Rs. 2 billion to bail out failing budget airline Mihin Lanka just one month ago. (DB)
