UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that he would do everything in his power to safeguard the independence of the Judiciary without betraying Parliament.

Wickremesinghe said that within Parliament he would do everything possible to stop the impeachment motion but would not appear before the Court.  “I am not willing to betray Parliament. I don’t need to go to Court,” Wickremesinghe charged. Speaking at the launch of the UNP’s Communication Drive, Wickremesinghe said that the United National Party would provide its fullest support to attempts made by the legal fraternity and judges to protect the independence of the Judiciary.

“I admire the position taken by the Bar Association and support their efforts and the efforts of lawyers and judges to stand up for the independence of the Judiciary,” the UNP Leader said. (DB)
