The National Freedom Front (NFF) led by Government Minister Wimal Weerawansa has decided to contest the Uva Provincial Council elections independently. Weerawansa announced at a press briefing held yesterday that differences of opinion on some issues with the ruling UPFA led to the NFF deciding to contest the polls independently. Weerawansa said that the Government had made some decisions unilaterally without consulting the other members of the alliance. Among those decisions, Weerawansa said, was the decision by the President to expand the mandate of the Missing Persons Commission to investigate war crimes and appoint three foreign experts to oversee the investigation. Weerawansa said the decision had been taken without consulting the alliance members. He was of the opinion that the Government was now trying to do locally, what the UN Human Rights Council was attempting to do in Geneva. The NFF Leader said that his party worked hard to safeguard the Government and ensure its victory at elections. However he said now the party has been forced to reconsider its position. He said that in order to continue being a coalition, the Government must respect all members of the alliance. (Colombo Gazette)
