Nations Trust Bank, led by Tharindu Ariyawansa, lifted the Governor’s Trophy for the first time, dethroning defending champions Commercial Credit and Finance at the third Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka (CRIB) six-a-side cricket tournament which concluded at the P. Sara Oval on Sunday.
A record 74 men’s teams and 39 women’s teams participated in the tournament which commenced on 11 October. A total of 114 matches were conducted over two days on four pitches.
NTB beat Commercial Credit by one wicket with a single delivery to spare in the men’s final. Chasing a target of 69 runs, NTB needed 18 runs in the last over, bowled by Commercial Credit Captain Anura Prasad Dias.
NTB’s last man Sampath Srilal slammed three successive sixes to achieve victory.
The match between the bankers and the non-banking financial institutions, played for the brand new GM’s Plate was an introduction to the tournament. The bankers, who were led by HNB Managing Director Johnathon Alles, won the match by eight runs.
Central Bank, led by Chandrika Rajapaksa, won the women’s tournament, beating debutants State Mortgage and Investment Bank in the final.
In the men’s third place playoff, Peoples Bank beat Senkadagala Finance.
