The Galle Face Hotel recently marked the end of restoration work on it at an extravagant event which displayed the hotel’s unblemished old-world charm and elegant persona. The evening was commemorated with the unveiling of a marble plaque by President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Tourism Minister John Amaratunga. Galle Face Hotel Chairman Sanjeev Gardiner, his mother Mavis Gardiner, his wife Sureka Gardiner and his children were also present.
Since its beginnings in 1864, the hotel has been romanticised as a heritage landmark for many years. However, rather than being rooted in the past, the Galle Face Hotel has instead endeavoured to embrace and celebrate its rich history to deliver to tomorrow’s traveller. Therefore while preserving its original glory and exceptional colonial architecture, the hotel has begun a new chapter in history following an extensive restoration project which spanned over two years.
