INFOTEL 2014 now on

Sri Lanka’s premier ICT exhibition INFOTEL 2014 was inaugurated yesterday by Chief Guest Minister of Telecommunications and IT Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. Commenting at the opening, Siyambalapitiya stated: “The Government has carried out successful economic development over the last few years and we are one of the partners of this success – after defeating terrorism, Sri Lanka recorded rapid IT literacy growth and today it has increased to over 50%. We hope to reach 70% in 2016 and create 100,000 IT technicians in the country.” Organised by the Federation of ICT Industry in Sri Lanka (FITIS), INFOTEL 2014 will be open from 24 to 26 October under the theme ‘A Smarter Tomorrow’ at the BMICH, Colombo. The exhibition features 200 plus stalls in a special pavilion covering eight sectors – software, hardware and digital devices, cloud computing, computer games, mobile computing, emerging technologies, ICT education and training. Small and medium ICT entrepreneurs are featured in a special area, while career guidance programs are also available with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka. Innovation are also featured, with universities, technical and school innovators and young computer scientist winners showcasing their talents. A special feature is ICT innovation in defence activities by the Sri Lanka Army, Air Force and Police and a special ICT museum containing an impressive collection of ICT gadgetry over the last 40 years. These parallel programs at this year’s event will cater to people from all walks of life and varied businesses, providing them attractive opportunities. Over 100,000 local and international visitors including decision makers of leading organisations and students are expected to attend the exhibition. Pix by Kithsiri De Mel
