The seventh National Cleaner Production awards program was held on 19 February, with Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen as the Chief Guest and Norwegian Ambassador Grete Lochenas the Guest of Honor.
In 2007, National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) pioneered environmental awards in Sri Lanka with its first award ceremony. The objective of this event is to recognize and appreciate enterprises that have contributed to conserve resources and minimise waste generation in their business operations. Unlike in other environmental award programs, number of applicants for this event increased annually.
Industrial enterprises and service organisations who has taken steps to improve their production efficiency while at the same time contributing to the protection of the environment by eliminating or minimising their wastes and emissions at operational stage by voluntarily adopting cleaner production approach were rewarded by these awards.
NCPC is the foremost cleaner production solutions provider in Sri Lanka. Founded in early 2002, the centre has over 10 years of experience promoting cleaner production and resource efficiency in various industrial and non-industrial sectors in the country.
Categories considered for Awards were: Manufacturing Large; Manufacturing Medium; Manufacturing Small; Services; and Public & Other Institutes. Cinnamon Citadel – Kandy and Habarana Lodge Ltd. Habarana were awarded respectively for the Bronze and Silver in Service category.
In the category of Manufacturing medium, the Bronze award was rewarded to Lankem Ceylon PLC, Lankem Agro Chemical Factory, Pannala and Silver was to Wijeya Newspapers Ltd., Kalalgoda, Pannipitiya.
MAS Active Ltd. – Synergy Division won the Bronze award in Manufacturing large sector. The Silver award went to Coca Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Ltd. Biyagama. MAS Active Ltd. – Asialine at Middeniya was the winner of Gold award of Manufacturing Large sector.
