French animated film festival till 9 Nov. at Alliance Française of Colombo

A French animated film festival will be held from 2-9 November at Alliance Française of Colombo as part of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and France. 

A week dedicated to French animated movies: It is the occasion to discover and enjoy the excellence and creativity of French animation. All the screenings come with English subtitles.

A program adapted to all audience: very young audience, young audience and families, adults and cinema lovers. A total of eight animated movies and 16 short animated movies. The screenings will be held at Alliance Française of Colombo at 6 p.m. on the weekdays and a special program will be proposed for the weekend (4 and 5 November). Dedicated screenings will be organised for schools. Free and open to all (fist come first served basis). 

The French Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Maldives is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and France. On this occasion, a series of events are organised during the months of October, November and December 2023, to celebrate the longstanding friendship between France and Sri Lanka through arts. Detailed program of the festival:

3 flagship animated movies 

  • Le petit Nicolas / Little Nicholas, happy as can be by Amandine Fredon and Benjamin Massoubre (2022): the story of René Goscinny and Jean-Jacques Sempé as they create the influential Le Petit Nicolas series of illustrated children’s books, followed by millions of readers. 
  • Le Pharaon, le sauvage et la princesse/ The black pharaoh, the savage and the princess by Michel Ocelot (2022): the latest animated movie of the talented creator of Kirikou (1998), a trio of colorful, sophisticated animated tales from Sudan, Medieval France and 18th century Turkey. 
  • A trio of colorful, sophisticated animated tales from Sudan, Medieval France and 18th century Turkey.
  • Interdit aux chiens et aux italiens/ No dogs or Italian allowed by Alain Ughetto (2021): Combining poetry and realism, small and big history, in an original and personal animation style, Alain Ughetto signs a very endearing work of testimony on Italian migration.
  • Animated movies without words for the very young children and non-English-speaking audience: a selection of 11 silent short-animated movie for 2 screenings of 45 minutes each, dedicated to very young audience (from age 3 to 6) or non-English-speaking audience. 
  • Animated movie for all audience, cinema-lovers and cinephiles: a selection of 5 short-animated movies for 1 screening of 1h17.
