Alexandre Dumas’s epic novel The Count of Monte-Cristo comes in a truly lavish adaptation with breath-taking backdrops and a mind-blowing pace. Its international premiere took place on 22 May as part of the out-of-competition program at the Cannes Festival, and it will premiere in Sri Lanka as an unmissable event for cinema lovers. In their movie, film directors Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière offer us a breath-taking adaptation of 19th century prolific writer Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 epic novel of the same name, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. It tells the story of young Edmond Dantès, arrested on his wedding day for a crime he did not commit. After 14 years incarcerated in the island prison of Château d’If, the man makes a daring escape. Immensely wealthy, the ‘Count of Monte-Cristo’ returns to France under an assumed name, seeking vengeance on those who betrayed him.

Produced by the renowned French film company Pathé and released in June 2024, the film was considered as one of the most eagerly awaited releases this summer in France. It reached over seven million French spectators and attracted excellent reviews, showcasing a tale that keeps fascinating book and cinema audiences alike.

Embassy of France is inviting Sri Lankan audience to come and experience the magic of French cinema.
