Jessica Haines to perform ‘The Tale of a Shadow and a Girl Called Violet’ at Punchi Theatre on 6 March

The final show of the Alokaya Oli Production ‘The Tale of a Shadow and a Girl Called Violet,’ written and performed by Jessica Haines, lead actress from the award-winning film ‘Disgrace’, will be staged at the Namel Malini Punchi Theatre on 6 March at 7:30 p.m.

Jessica Haines is a South African actress and currently lives in Sri Lanka.

The play is directed by James Cuningham who is known for his groundbreaking work in devising strong visual and innovative theatre performances. He has worked as an actor and director across 15 countries in more than 60 theatre, film, and television productions and won multiple awards and nominations for his work in South Africa, Korea, UAE and the UK.

The Tale of a Shadow and a Girl Called Violet tells the story of a young girl growing up in Africa, charged with youth, imagination and a quest for adventure but soon falls victim to the inevitable pressure of growing up and meeting the social expectations and demands of society.

Her mental health is compromised, and she soon finds herself in a dark and unpredictable place, haunted by shadows and a provocative demon, only to be rescued by the notion of home and the memories of her childhood.

The narrative unpacks each chapter of her life, from childhood to adulthood and the many moments that ultimately shape her character. The play ran for two nights at the Overseas School of Colombo auditorium earlier this week.
