Mrs. World 2024 first runner-up, Ishadi Amanda, received a hero’s welcome as she arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport recently.
Greeted by a distinguished delegation, she was later honoured at a special reception hosted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), marking a significant moment in the country’s pageantry history.
Amanda made history on 31 January by securing the first runner-up position at the prestigious Mrs. World pageant in Las Vegas, a milestone never before achieved by Sri Lanka.
South Africa’s Tshego Gaelae was crowned Mrs. World 2024, but Amanda’s achievement stands as Sri Lanka’s highest placement since the inception of the competition.
A legacy of success and challenges
Amanda’s success follows in the footsteps of Sri Lanka’s two previous Mrs. World winners: Rosy Senanayake, who claimed the title in 1984, and Caroline Jurie, who won in 2019. However, the aftermath of the 2019 win saw controversy that temporarily hindered Sri Lanka’s participation in international pageants. After years of setbacks, Amanda’s victory reignites hope for the country’s standing in the global beauty industry.
Mrs. Sri Lanka World National Director Chandimal Jayasinghe played a pivotal role in Amanda’s journey, with Calin stepping in as the major sponsor. Overcoming bureaucratic hurdles, sleepless nights, and logistical struggles, Amanda’s commitment was resolute.
“She’s a superwoman who left her family and business in France to bring glory to Sri Lanka,” Jayasinghe remarked.
A key figure behind Amanda’s success was Rukmal Senanayaka, the renowned choreographer who trained the 2019 Mrs. World winner. His guidance was instrumental in transforming Amanda, who had no prior experience in catwalks, into a poised and confident global contender within months. “The audience may clap today and criticise tomorrow, but believing in yourself is what truly matters,” Senanayaka shared.
Amanda’s advocacy trainer, Tharamaka Guruge, also played a crucial role in refining her presentation and public speaking skills. The event’s transportation and logistical support were managed by the Sri Lanka Transport Board, with contributions from Madhubashini Perera and other officials.
Calin National Sales Manager Sudaraka Chiranthana emphasised the ethical standards upheld throughout the competition. “We respect the judges’ decision and stand by individuals like Chandimal and Rukmal, who elevate Sri Lanka on global platforms,” he said.
Amanda’s message to women
At the press conference held at Amari Colombo, Amanda shared her personal journey of resilience. “From a young age, I felt different, and that feeling empowered me. I started working in France at 16, took risks, and built my own business despite being told to stay in a bank. People said marriage would affect my beauty, then motherhood would, but I proved them wrong. Women can balance family and success while embracing their own power.”
Addressing the criticism surrounding the competition’s results, Amanda gracefully defended the winner. “She was my roommate and a friend who supported me. A real queen fixes another queen’s crown – that’s the biggest win.”
Amanda also expressed gratitude to Chandimal Jayasinghe for his firm guidance. “He treated me like a father and provided us with invaluable experiences at no cost. His branding has given true meaning and value to the beauty industry.”
Recognising the impact of her global reach, Amanda called on companies and the Sri Lankan Government to leverage her influence to promote tourism and national branding. “Millions are following me now – let’s use this attention to elevate Sri Lanka.”
As Sri Lanka celebrates this remarkable achievement, Amanda’s journey serves as an inspiration, proving that perseverance, dedication, and self-belief can break barriers and place the nation on the global stage once again.
