Weird and wonderful wildflowers

The season for wild flowers has just begun. It has been claimed that the “weirdest and most wonderful” as well as the largest collection of wild flowers on Earth are in Western Australia (WA). 

Researchers say that around 50 new species of wildflowers are identified in WA every year. They are internationally renowned and between 60 to 70% are not found anywhere else in the world. 

While many wildflowers can be found all year round, during June to September each year thousands of different varieties carpet paddocks and nestle between rocks all the way from the Pilbara in the north of WA to the south coast of WA, states ‘Horizons’ – magazine of the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) WA. “As well as sheer numbers, WA’s wildflowers are famed for their uniqueness, both in design and behaviour. Some are insectivorous (they eat insects), some flower only underground, and others only flower at night,” the magazine article says.
