The origins of to tea dates back to 2737 with Chinese Emperor Shen Nung advocating the health benefits of tea almost 5000 years ago.
Tea became popular the world over from Ceylon Tea in the 19th Century, with the Scotsman James Taylor started the first tea plantation on the Loolecondera Tea Estate where he perfected the technique of plucking – ‘the two leaves and a bud’, history states that tea began as a medicine and then grew into a beverage.
Production and exports of green tea in Sri Lanka started in 1982. It is now a household name. The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, a powerful anti-oxidant which besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in preventing heart attacks and stroke.

Green tea is from the same plant organically known as Camellia Sinensis. After the tea leaves are plucked and sorted, they are either steamed or pan fired. Compared to the normal black tea, green tea does not undergo the process of fermentation (oxidation) in production.
