Alliance française de Kandy has served the Hill Capital nearly 45 long fruitful years promoting language and culture. AYA (Alliance Young Artists) and Art Week annual programmes still remain the popular and much sought after cultural events in the calendar of our Institute.

The Art Week came into existence in the year 1998 with the maiden anniversary art programme featuring Delacroix the reputed Romantic painter. An art workshop of selected students from schools in and around Kandy was held as a parallel discipline in order to discover the wonderful horizon of art, its freedom, its discipline and its rewards providing a platform for young talents.

Similar Art Week Programmes followed featuring the works of Cézanne, Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky, Vlaminck and Henri Rousseau coupled with Art Workshops.

Art Week 2011 spotlights the work of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) the self proclaimed French Artist who announced that he is the proudest and most arrogant man in France. In the history of modern art movement he is more appropriately defined as a rebellious who vociferously campaigned against the age old traditions maintained by Academy. He often endeavoured to live up to his ideal. “Painting is essentially concrete art and can only consist in the representation of real and existing thinks.”

An exhibition of his work will be held from 28 October to 7 November at the Gallery of the Alliance française de Kandy, No. 642, Peradeniya Road, Kandy. An Art Workshop will also be held followed by an exhibition of the works produced in the workshop.

This cultural programme no doubt creates a passionate interest in aesthetics building bridges of understanding between artists of different countries and cultures. Art lovers not only of Hill Capital but also the rest of the country should pay eloquent tribute to Alliance française de Kandy for organising these rare Art Weeks.
