Be a part of Earth Hour 2012

Earth Hour engages hundreds of millions of people from all corners of the globe to take positive actions for the environment and celebrate their commitment with the people of the world by switching off their lights for one designated hour.

Earth Hour 2012 aims to show the actions that people, businesses and governments world-wide are taking to reduce their environmental impact. Thereby establishing and encouraging others to join an interconnected global community engaged in dialogue and resource sharing that generates real solutions to environmental challenges.

At precisely 8:30p.m. on Saturday 31 March, hundreds of millions of people from community, business and government, all over the world will turn off their lights for Earth Hour, transcending all barriers of race, religion, culture, society, generation and geography in a global celebration of their commitment to protect the one thing that unites us all – the planet.

Go beyond the hour

Earth Hour is not about saving an hour’s electricity, it’s much bigger than that. It’s about realising that the actions we take, from the energy we use, to the food we buy and water we drink, has an effect on the world. We all depend on our amazing planet and need to look after it – not just for an hour a year, but every day.

So in this year, when the lights go back on, we want you to think about what you can change in your daily life that will benefit the planet, to share your stories, thoughts and ideas with us and to get inspiration from what others are doing. So tell us what you’re going to do and we’ll tell the world.

Your participation is important

Our future depends on it. Across the world, biodiversity and natural habitats are disappearing at a greater rate than ever before. We are depleting the earth of wild animals, water, wood and other natural resources faster than they can be replenished; polluting and altering natural habitats and changing the entire planet’s climate.

Things will only worsen if we continue in the same direction. Earth Hour raises awareness of sustainability issues. But there’s more to it than switching off lights for one hour once a year. It’s about giving people a voice and working together to create a better future for our planet.
