The blockbuster Chennai Express staring Sharukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, was a massive hit at both the box office grossing over $ 19 million and in cinemas worldwide. The highly entertaining movie received widespread success in Sri Lanka spearheaded by Ceylon Theatres who launched it to the Sri Lankan audience with a unique activation and running the film for an impressive fifty days in packed cinemas. Cinemas worldwide launched the movie with great displays and fanfare, Sri Lanka was right in tow. A brilliant activation campaign was carried out where three unique street performances were held in different locations across the city depicting scenes from the movies to promote it. The performances held locally were dramatic and the performers that staged the activations resembled the actors from the film; the activations were filmed and combined to create Ceylon Theatre’s very own version of the Chennai Express trailer. The movie premiered in Sri Lanka before any other country and such grandeur was perfect to commemorate this. Tickets presold two days before movie release Following the successful launch activation, tickets were presold two days before the movie released in local cinemas. From thereon, the trend of pre-selling began where tickets were sold out prior to each show. The lucrative fifty-day run of Chennai Express in Majestic City ended on 26 September and one fan in particular is sorely going to despair over this. Shirani Samarasekara, a devoted follower of Sharukh Khan for 15 years, had a momentous meeting with him on her seventieth birthday before the release of Chennai Express. She stated, “I watched Chennai Express a total of 22 times and each time I enjoyed it immensely. Ceylon Theatres have done a fantastic job of both promoting and screening great blockbusters such as Chennai Express and have delivered excellent service from the launch to screening till the very last day.” The triumph of this movie would not have been possible without the devotion and appreciation of the many fans like Shirani as well as the entertainment-loving public. After thriving for a month at the cinemas, Chennai Express grossed $ 19 million in the overseas market. Overall, the film made a staggering collection of $ 419 crore and catered perfectly to the local tastes of the Tamils, Sinhalese and the Hindi move lovers in general.
