Empowering the special child on 2 August Colombo Jewellery Stores will be one of the main sponsors for the Kids’ Parade that the Chitra Lane School for the Special Child in collaboration with the Colombo Swimming Club will be having on Saturday, 2 August. Young people from the Chitra Lane School will walk the ramp to showcase some cool young trends this season. This show will be choreographed by renowned designer and choreographer Brian Kerkoven, adding an undeniable lustre to giving confidence to these children. The models strutting the catwalk will be from the Chitra Lane School, all of them children and young adults with special needs in varying age groups upto eighteen years, who will be joined by children from the Club’s membership, wearing clothes by Odel Kids, Embark, Mish Mash and Rishard of Raheemas. With tickets prices at Rs. 1,000 available at Colombo Swimming Club, the proceeds of the show will be channelled towards the projects initiated for the special child at the school. All those involved in the project, including compere Joanna Adams are collaborating at this fashion show, free of charge. With over 2,000 children and young adults under the care of this dedicated school that provides services and facilities for the early detection and intervention of disabilities, The Chitra Lane School for the Special Child teaches and trains those who have Down’s Syndrome, Asperger’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) Autism etc. In identifying their special abilities and talents and channeling it towards developing a productive life the school trains the children and youth in skills that could give them self employment avenues such as sewing, cooking, printing etc.  This fashion show enables these young people to showcase their talents. Another significant attraction at the Fashion Show will be that items produced by children at the Chitra Lane Sheltered Workshop will be on sale. The Workshop enables young people who graduate from the Chitra Lane School to be fully occupied while working with their mothers, to generate an income. Encompassing five vocational training units in sewing, manufacture of recycled paper, screen printing, cookery and housekeeping, the items on sale will include cloth gift bags, laundry bags and tote bags, hand embroidered purses, baby linen, quilts and recycled paper greeting cards. Launched in 1967, The Chitra Lane School for the Special Child is a Government-approved charity and is a day school for children with special needs. Today, it has evolved into a recognised facility, both locally and internationally, renowned for its comprehensive and well-structured training programs for physically and intellectually challenged children. The school initially operated from a single room on Lauries Road Colombo 4 and after various changes in address, eventually moved to its current location at Chitra Lane, continuing to enable children and young adults develop at their own pace and optimise their potential.
