You know the story – the beautiful princess, the prince, the wicked stepmother and of course the ugly sisters. But rarely one brings them to life on stage. We’ve all read them at some point, and even wished we were one of them. Well here’s the perfect moment. On 7 and 8 February you will get a chance to see one of the world’s best-loved fairy tales come to life at the Colombo International School auditorium. The ball begins at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
Why Cinderella? Well many reasons. Firstly, there is very little theatre in English for the whole family. And this production, although it has the bawdy comedy, is one place where the entire family could spend time in a good laugh. After a hard day’s work, what better way of relaxing and watching the two step sisters fighting their life out for a man? Secondly, such plays are rarely put on stage. And thirdly a lovely prelude to 14 February.
The Performing Arts Department of Colombo International School has been busy preparing for the production. The cast has been together for over two months and is now in the final stages of perfecting the art of pantomime. The cast is the senior school section, namely final year students (Year 13) and Year 12 students. The entire cast amounts to 35 and they are all waiting to take you into the land of fairy tales.
The Drama Club in the past has performed many genres of plays – an original musical a few years ago ‘When God Answered My Telephone Call’ ran into full houses. Serious theatre such as Jeffrey Archer’s ‘Beyond Reasonable Doubt,’ ‘No Why’ – a collection of serious plays were performed last year.
The club presents two productions a year, with this being the first for the year. The students of CIS are very keen on enhancing their skills in the performing arts and have a variety of ways of developing their acting and musical skills. At CIS every child has the platform to showcase their talent.
The production is directed by Head of Performing Arts Vinodh Senadeera and what is unique is that all aspects of the production are handled by the students. The play is organised by the Prefects Guild, which has been doing the senior production for many years. With the support of their Principal and the management the production is guaranteed to be one not to be missed.
The leads are performed by Ramathi Bandaranayaka, Eran Fernando, Keshya Amarasinghe, Udani Mahamithwa, Senani Gunatilleke, Isuru Perera, Chantel Soza, Aishwarya Jayasinghe, Aavin Dambawinne, Shanaia Munidasa and Hashila Fernando.
The riot of comedy begins at 7:30 p.m. on 7 and 8 February at the CIS auditorium. Tickets and box plan are now available at the reception of the school.
