Colombo International School has won the Best School Award together with the Best Community Service Award at the Colombo Model United Nations [CO-MUN] held from 27 February to 1 March. This was the 21st annual session of CO-MUN, a simulation of the United Nations organised by students which is a highly-prestigious event of international significance. This year’s theme was ‘Global Deadlock’.
The most coveted award of the conference is the Best School Award. This year CIS students not only won the Best School Award, but also 21 other awards, including the Best Charity Project Award. This they won for their highly successful ‘Donate to Educate’ drive that collected stationery items for disadvantaged students in war-affected schools in the Northern Province. 323 CIS students contributed to this project and CIS collected over 12,600 items including books, pens, pencil cases, crayon boxes and colouring pencils for this purpose.
The Model United Nations is almost as old as the UN itself. Its purpose is to provide students with experience in the world of diplomacy, by simulating the functioning of the UN. Sri Lanka commenced an MUN program in 1994, starting with the Colombo Model United Nations, and later with the addition of a second conference, the Sri Lanka Model United Nations (SLMUN).
For the past few years, students from Colombo International School have been the most successful at Model United Nations, having won the Best School Award at CO-MUN in 2015, 2013, 2012, 2010 and in many previous years, while winning Sri Lanka Model United Nations six times out of seven. This year students from the school won 21 awards.
