Art, food, music – what better way to spend a Saturday evening? Head down to Charcoal Gallery Cafe in Mount Lavinia this evening to be a part of a charity fundraising photography exhibition, ‘Common Thread,’ featuring Sri Lankan native photographers Jehan D. Adahan, Gananeswaran (Ganesh) Maheswaran, Joys Chokatte, Rajiv Thilina Jayawardena and guest photographer from San Francisco, Reynaldo Cayetano Jr. Aimed at introducing a groundbreaking relationship between art and community in Sri Lanka, ‘Common Thread’ will showcase street photography upon the photographers own interpretation. Funds from the prints sold will be directed towards the Lawris Children’s Home in Colombo 10. The Lawris Children’s Home cares for and facilitates girls between the ages of four to 17. They are staffed with caretakers to ensure that girls gain proper education and are provided for during their formative years. The purpose of the charity is to raise funds for their immediate needs; as well as to create visibility and harbour aid for essential programs such as English courses. Held from 6 p.m. to midnight, the exhibition is an entrance-free event. Grab a bite from the Charcoal Gallery Cafe and admire the photographs – and if you are musical, there is an open mic at the venue as well. Along with the exhibition, Charcoal Gallery Cafe will be selling hand painted cards by their customers at a nominal price which will be directed towards the said charity. The cafe will also provide special rates on their menu. Local artists who love face painting, clay making, henna drawings and sketching will also be at the venue. The exhibition hopes to raise awareness for Lawris and their kids and will focus on how artists can integrate their work with the community. It will also be a common ground of opportunity for key personnel from Lawris to network with and inform guests of their services and needs.
