Confessions of a Wonderer

On December 13, 2010, Sulochana Dissanayake, a freelance artist who specializes in theatre and education, discussed using performing arts to promote awareness of social issues during a public lecture at the American Center Auditorium.  

Sulochana, a 2009 Watson Fellow shared her experiences working in South Africa with professional dance troops who promoted awareness for issues such as HIV/AIDS, violence against women, and poverty.  She also talked about the use of puppets for entertaining children in Indonesia. “Puppets were a tool for entertaining children, but had been used for centuries as a means of acceptable political dissent in countries throughout the world” Sulo said.  “It is like magic. It could do anything that humans can do” she added.

The event was part of a monthly lecture series organized by the American Center.
