Join Etienne Hugel, one of three members of the Hugel family – 12th consecutive generation currently running Hugel et Fils – for a journey through the Hugel and Fils vineyards and wineries\ When a 12th generation winemaker comes to town all the way from Alsace to personally take you through his family’s award-winning wines and their winemaking secrets, you know you have to be there. The Hugel family is a member of the Primum Familiae Vini and has mastered their art of making fine wines over generations. Trekurious bring you the rare opportunity of meeting the Hugel family and other blue-blooded wine families to hear their stories and successes in their Winemaker Series. The Trekurious Winemaker Series have always focused on bringing you prominent winemaking families, but this time the bar has been set impossibly high. The Hugel family is as close as you get to blue-blood in the wine world. Consider the fact that their wine cellars are located under 16th century buildings and contain oak barrels which are more than a century old; one of them the famous S. Caterine cask, dated 1715, the oldest working cask as per the Guinness Book of World Records! Backed by such a legacy, this dynastic winemaker hardly needs to talk about his wines but Etienne Hugel will insist upon doing so. Their wines are, after all, the most celebrated dry whites from the Alsace region. This wine-tasting session to be held on 25 February with Etienne Hugel will be paired with a four-course meal prepared by celebrated Chef Indika Jaywardena of the Mount Lavinia Hotel. The session will include tasting from their headline labels and best vintages, including the famous Hugel Jubilee, a perfect Grand Cru wine, which was created in 1989 to celebrate their 350th anniversary. As you taste these famous wines, Etienne will talk about how building a legacy and keeping a vineyard running within the family for hundreds of years requires a triumph of passion over profit. And while they’re known to guard their family secrets with a vengeance, who’s to tell what comes out after a couple of glasses of a perfectly medium dry Reisling? The Hugel and Fils Winemaker Series evening will be held on 25 February at the Maitland State Room, Mount Lavinia Hotel from 8 p.m. onwards.
