Street dogs of every imaginable size, shape, colour and disposition had the party of their lives at the Odel ‘Street Pooch Pawty’ at the CH&FC Grounds on Sunday at a fun-filled event organised to celebrate the passion that brings together street dogs and the ‘pashionable people’ who open their homes to them. Odel and the company’s community animal welfare programme Embark pulled out all the stops to provide opportunities for canines and their humans to indulge in fun, games, grooming and a little bit of ‘showing off’ at this unique event, organised to promote Embark’s message of caring for street dogs, and to underline the fact that adopting a street dog has become quite a fashion in Sri Lanka. The main attractions at this four-hour event was a fashion show that also featured street dogs and a pooch talent show at which registered former street dogs displayed their prowess in tricks, obedience, eating and dressing up, vying for honours at competitions for best costume, most obedient dog, best sausage catcher, cutest ears, cutest smile, best wag, friendliest dog, and with their owners, for most Pashionable couple. One of the highlights of the evening was a dog show featuring the canines of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF). Other fun activities included dog art, an exciting event dogs and their owners to create their own art with paw, tail, foot, hand prints and creative painting; grooming by professionals at a doggy spa and portrait photos or caricatures for registered pooches and owners by artists on site. A bouncy castle and face painting for children, food and drink stalls and music helped add to the carnival atmosphere at this inimitable event, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. ‘Rozzy’ – a new collection from Embark – was launched at the fashion show. The collection is now available at all Odel and LUV SL stores.
