Film fiesta at the Russian Centre this May

The Pianist

The Pianist is a 2002 biographical war film directed by Roman Polanski, starring Adrien Brody. It is an adaptation of the autobiography of the same name by Jewish-Polish musician Władysław Szpilman. The film is a co-production between Poland, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The film met with significant critical praise and received multiple awards and nominations. At the 75th Academy Awards, The Pianist won Oscars for Best Director (Roman Polanski), Best Adapted Screenplay (Ronald Harwood) and Best Actor (Adrien Brody). The film was also nominated for four other awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture.

It will be screened on Friday, 25 May at 6.00 p.m. at the Russian Centre Auditorium.

Stalker

Stalker (Russian):  is a 1979 science fiction film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, with a screenplay written by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky, loosely based on their novel Roadside Picnic. It depicts an expedition led by the Stalker to bring his two clients to a site known as the Zone, which has the supposed potential to fulfill a person’s innermost desires.

The title of the film, which is the same in Russian and English, is derived from the English word to stalk in the long-standing meaning of approaching furtively, much like a hunter. In the film a stalker is a professional guide to the zone, someone who crosses the border into the forbidden zone with a specific goal.

The House of Wind

An ordinary woman, Taisia Levishna, is the yard cleaner in a children’s isolation hospital. She has just found out that her son, who has gone missing at the southern border ten years ago, had actually died. In order to fill the painful emptiness in her soul, Taya kidnaps a seven-year-old Asian boy called Timur from the hospital. According to the doctor’s diagnosis, Timur has got a terminal illness.

It will be screened on Friday, 11 May at 6.00 p.m. at the Russian Centre Auditorium.

 

Solaris

Solaris (Russian): tr. Solyaris) is a 1972 film adaptation of the novel Solaris (1961), directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. The film is a meditative psychological drama occurring mostly aboard a space station orbiting the fictional planet Solaris. The scientific mission has stalled, because the scientist crew has fallen to emotional crises. Psychologist Kris Kelvin travels to the Solaris space station; to learn and evaluate the situation - yet soon encounters the same mysterious phenomenon like the others.
