Cod liver oil that contains Omega-3 fatty acids is considered one of nature’s best gifts to mankind. Including Omega-3 in our daily diet is said to be vital for brain function, normal growth and development. Many studies have been conducted that confirm the importance of Omega-3 for heart health, decreasing the risk of heart disease. Omega-3 is also proven to slow down the process of ageing by minimising the damage caused by free radicals and other environmental pollution on human DNA. Although Omega-3 is considered essential for the body, the body cannot manufacture it and must obtain it from external sources. Omega-3 reduces inflammation and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and arthritis. More importantly, the positive effects of Omega-3 on skin health is considered vital. While bolstering the skin cell membrane of epidermis, Omega-3 also contributes to ensuring a healthy, well-moisturised skin, says Dr. Robert Tornambe MD, one of New York City’s leading Plastic Surgeons who has experience working with many different types of skin. The skin cell membrane is the outer layer of skin cell that monitors the intake and disposal of nutrients and waste products entering and leaving the skin cell. The skin cell membrane also influences the ability of the cell to hold onto water. If the skin cell can hold onto water, it results in a moisturised, softer skin, ensuring the prevention of wrinkles  and the reduction of existing milder wrinkles. Cod Liver Oil containing Omega-3 fatty acids contributes to the upkeep of the skin cell membrane, improving the texture and quality of skin, says Dr Tornambe. Exposure to sun’s ultraviolet rays speeds up the aging process of the skin. According to Dr Tornambe , research has confirmed that Cod Liver Oil containing omega-3 fatty acids can play a role in decreasing skin damage resulting from sun exposure and cancers associated with sun exposure. Omega-3 is also considered to contribute towards speedy healing of wounds due to its anti-inflammatory properties and therefore can effectively be used to treat atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and acne. Found commonly in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and cod, Omega-3 fatty acids are also present in algae, krill, and certain plants and nut oils. The fish obtain their supply of Omega-3  from eating algae. However, since such oily fish are not easily accessible we can obtain our daily dose of Omega-3 from Cod Liver Oil. Previous studies conducted at the University of California have confirmed the ability of Omega- 3 found in Cod Liver Oil to minimise the shortening of DNA, thereby delay the process of ageing. Including Cod Liver Oil that contains Omega-3 in your daily diet is considered vital not only for skin and heart health but over-all good health.
