The Bishop’s College Auditorium will come alive with ‘Flight of Flamboyance,’ an evening of entertainment presented by the students of the Varuni Jayasekara Academy of Speech, Drama and Communication, this evening. The event commenced yesterday, 21 June. Embodied into the program is an array of dramatic selections, choral work and musicals performed by students from the age of four to 27 years. The evening promises a ‘flight of flamboyance’ from the streets of London to the Land of Oz to the jungles of India and forests of Sherwood. Enjoyable and appealing to both the young and the old, other items include ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’ and a musical medley comprising songs from well loved musicals. In response to a question with regard to the objectives of planning such an event, Varuni Jayasekara, the Principal of the Academy said: “A concert such as this would provide the students with an opportunity to sensitise themselves as a body, in a focused manner, to that beautiful aspect of the arts which we call drama and would also afford them the opportunity to appreciate the cascading strong messages that drama does contribute to the enhancement of our perception of life.” At a time when improved communication is placing us all in immediate touch with events in many parts of the world and negotiations play a pivotal role in resolving issues at not only the work place but also at national and international fora, one’s self confidence and sincerity, the lucidity of expression and the role of the stage cannot be overemphasised. Thus, this opportunity afforded to the students of the Varuni Jayasekara Academy will no doubt kindle in the students those latent talents and also assist and enhance the already talented to blossom on a public stage.
