Gathering to the beat

Music is an integral part of Sri Lankan culture spurring the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) to invite marching bands from the Western Province National Schools to participate in “Young Drums 2011.”

This is expected to give the chance for bands to showcase their talent with ISIC launching their international student identity card to the public on 3 April, the day of the event. “Young Drums 2011” comprises two categories – Eastern and Western; schools can enter themselves only into one category. The eminent panel of judges will focus on creativity, discipline, teamwork and showmanship and the winning band from each category will earn Rs.100 000 in cash. In addition to the marching band festival the audience can treat themselves to various food stalls and exciting outdoor activities. The event will kick start at Green Path at 9.00 am and enrolment is free for all bands. Young Drums 2011 is sponsored by YES FM and the Sunday Times and moves forward under the patronage of the Education Ministry.

“ISIC worldwide is about students, youth, lifestyle and fun. Since this is our very first event we wanted to do something different. The ISIC team put out heads together and came up with “Young Drums” whose inspiration stems from the movie “Drumline.”
