Gear up for Alternative Sunday 6

Alternative Sundays from the inception was not intended to ever be another once-a-month gig where you watch an act or band, have a good time and go home. It was about creating a community that was all about supporting talent from the land, regardless of identity and social factors, it was about bridging genres and fans, bringing people together for the kind of art that’s meant to be appreciated.

Over the few months, they’ve created a family and one of those members is Alternative Sunday official sound engineer Ruban Balakrishnan. Here’s his take on the series: “It’s been a great experience, being a part of Alternative Sundays from gig one, the show that started off with a few bands and a small crowd, has now emerged into one huge event all together.

“Being an audio engineer and a drummer by profession whilst specialising as an F.O.H and fold back engineer for the last 15 years, the experience I’ve gained during the last five rounds of the series is something that I’ve never had any place else as its always been one of continuous growth; It always feels so good to see young talent from home being given the freedom and encouragement to perform and express themselves!

“It’s a privilege to work with so many outstanding bands and acts who dabble in various genres such as pop, rock, dubstep, metal, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll; kudos to the organisers (Anil Balasuriya and Yazmin Yousuf) for encouraging the talent of the land with possibly the best platform, that is Alternative Sundays.”

On 29 July, expect more of that amazing variety, sonically! Troop down to everyone’s favourite hangout – FUZE on the day, gates open at 6.30 p.m. The acts for the evening are: Asela Perera and Niamh Evans (Acoustic), Prazanna (Ex-Cancer) and Friends (from the Old Skool) Birey and Riyal of Helter Skelter featuring Maria (Semi Acoustic) Ras Ceylon (reggae/ hip hop), Dawn Jay (RnB), Mixmaster Blong J.C.
