Post a morning or afternoon wandering the cobbled and cute streets of Galle Fort, a burger is the perfect snack or meal to replace all those hard lost calories. Luckily for us, there are many options to choose from! Here are Verity Mace’s picks for top three burgers in the Galle Fort and surrounds

The Newbie – Rocket Burger

In the Galle Fort, this cozy retro styled diner is big on burger options – they have not one but two vege patty choices! They opened in October (last month) and are already getting a lot of love on Trip Advisor nQuirky and cool setting nPrime people watching from seating upstairs nHandmade thick cut fries, a big plus in the south of Sri Lanka (the land of the French fry!) nJuicy and sloppy – this is not the burger place for a hot date nNot licensed, but they do have a unique signature Iced Tea – blended and made with love by the Head Chef at Rocket Burger (ask him about it!)

The Gourmet – Fortaleza

Simple and sophisticated, if a burger can be called that – this one would be. Enjoy your burger in a beautifully laid back courtyard in the Galle Fort, secluded and lush this is a great place for a long leisurely lunch or dinner
  • Crispy spicy wedges that are the best I have tasted anywhere (and I am a connoisseur of potatoes!). The burger also is served with a tangy and sweet tamarind chutney that has magical powers
  • Sorry vegetarians, no vege burger options here. Fellow carnivores you have a choice of chicken or beef
  • Easy to eat! This is the best place for that date, or if you are travelling with a messy eater
  • Enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your meal (this place has a great wine selection!)

The Homestyle – The Railway Café

Located just outside of the Fort near the Galle bus station – enjoy your burger on a big comfy couch in a cozy boho setting. If you are looking for a Burger that looks and tastes like it is made with love – this one is it!
  • Beef burger is delicious and juicy! Nowhere near as messy as Rocket Burger but more than Fortaleza
  • A choice of sides, salad (why would you?) or handmade chips
  • Lots of options for drinks of the non alcoholic kind, I suggest the passion fruit and mint cooler – yum!
  • Bonus – there is a gorgeous boutique with clothes and crafts made and designed in Sri Lanka. Just perhaps try on any clothes before you enjoy that big beef burger.
