Janashakthi partners with the United Nations

22 April 2012 will see over a billion people gather in cinemas worldwide to view a montage of human experiences collected from across the planet in celebration of Earth Day 2012.    



‘One Day on Earth,’ a film comprising contributions from ordinary people from almost every country in the world who set out to capture a slice of life will be screened simultaneously  in almost every city in the world.

The unique motion picture is about interconnected humanity that has been created from over 3000 hours of footage and shot by communities in every country of the world on 10 October 10 2010. The collaboration was the first ever simultaneous filming event occurring in every country of the world.

The Sri Lankan leg of the screening will be hosted at the Liberty Cinema, Colombo, on 22 April at 6.30 p.m. Janashakthi Insurance, a leading insurer in the island, has stepped forward to sponsor this unique initiative which ties in with values embodied in the company’s life insurance policies, in a bid to bring to attention to human diversity and inclusion. The insurer has joined hands with the UN Office in Sri Lanka as its co-partner for the event.  

“It’s a celebration of life, of us embracing our oneness and our common humanity,” stated Prakash Schaffter, MD of Janashakthi. “It embodies our corporate values of unity and our commitment to foster commonalities and integration as a linchpin of our corporate ethos. It also has a nice fit as we resonate the theme of this unique initiative with the company’s bid to light up the lives and dreams of people and their aspirations by championing diversity and inclusion,” he added.

The film showcases the amazing diversity, conflict, tragedy and triumph that occurred in one day. Janashkthi invites the public to join the international community of thousands of filmmakers, hundreds of schools and dozens of non-profits to contribute to this unique global mosaic. ‘One Day on Earth’ is a community that not only watches, but also participates.

‘One Day on Earth’ started in September 2008 with the aim of creating a unique worldwide media event where thousands of participants would simultaneously film over a 24-hour period. The idea was conceived while watching musicians from different regions of the world collaborate on stage at the opening night of the World Festival of Sacred Music.

The film runs for almost two hours and comprises of different real life stories drawn from all over the world. Its ultimate goal is to create a unique opportunity to see the world and various issues faced by people ranging from poverty, environment and nature, education, gender equality, human rights, migration and refugees, healthcare, humanitarian and child welfare, through a new lens and learn how theses issues affect and unite people across the world.

The screening is open for the public on a first come, first served basis. Invites will be available at three Janashakthi branches; Full Option Office – Staple Street, Kalubowila and Battaramulla. Interested public can also contact the Janashakthi call centre on 0112 303 300 and obtain invites.
