As a part of the ongoing commitment to support wildlife and environment conservation, LTL Holdings (LTLH) has produced a unique calendar for 2015, highlighting Sri Lanka’s wild elephants.
The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), a distinct sub species of the Asian Elephant, was once abundantly prevalent all over the island. Today, the wild elephant population of Sri Lanka has dwindled down to mere 6,000 to 6,500 animals, who are under constant threat, due to the ongoing human elephant conflict (HEC).
Over 200 wild elephants on the average die each year due the conflict, while around 50 people are also killed due to altercations with elephants each year. Due to the complexity of the problem, piece-meal ad hoc solutions to solve the conflict have not be successful, and will need an overall holistic nationwide effort to prevent the demise of this wonderful natural treasure.
In an effort to create awareness and draw attention to the plight of the Sri Lankan elephant, LTLH has designed and produced a unique calendar for 2015, which has 12 photographs depicting Sri Lankan elephant and its life in the wild.
The calendar is designed in such a way that once it is used, and the monthly dates are torn off from the perforations, the calendar transforms itself into a virtual coffee table book, which can be retained as a collectible item.
The entire design concept, photography and layout was done by Dimitri Miththapala, an avid wildlife and elephant enthusiast. Karunaratne and Sons, one of Sri Lanka’s leading printing companies, who also have a strong focus of environment conservation, did the printing of the calendar.
In the forthcoming years, LTL hopes to produce similar calendars, highlighting different Sri Lankan faunal species.
