Samutthana (The King’s College London Resource Centre for Trauma, Displacement and Mental Health) presents an evening of provocative discussion and debate on child sexual abuse in Sri Lanka, moderated by Rosanna Flamer-Caldera (Executive Director, Equal Ground) and Nivendra Uduman (Counselling Psychologist, Samutthana).
Join them as they explore the realities of child sexual abuse through the lens of a survivor as she tells us her story, along with a panel of experts sharing their views – Dr. Ganesan (Consultant Psychiatrist), Dr. Lorna Fortune Counselling Psychologist), Dorian Cole (Systemic Family Therapist) and Shyamala Gomez (Lawyer, Country Director, FOKUS WOMEN).
Child sexual abuse is a very real concern for us living in Sri Lanka and no gender, social class, religion or culture is exempted. There is no one child who is more vulnerable than the other. The scars left are often indelible.
Stigma and shame contribute to abuse being swept under the carpet and its mere existence is often forgotten. “It won’t happen to my child, of that I’m confident,” is something we sometimes tend to hear and this fallacy leads to an increase in the risk of abuse taking place.
Child sexual abuse can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere and that is why we need to talk about it. Talking about it is the first step towards prevention and it is the need of the hour. It is not only the child who is affected; a child wounded is the whole of humanity wounded.
