The state-of-the-art Radiation Treatment Unit of Ceylinco Healthcare Services Ltd., (CHSL) has dispensed more than 6500 treatments since inception to the end of the year ending 31 March.

Of these, more than 3850 were Chemotherapy treatments, while over 1650 were treatments by the Unit’s Linear Accelerator, the first machine of its kind in Sri Lanka. Another 370 patient treatments involved Brachytherapy insertions, the company said.

The only standalone private radiation treatment facility in the country, the Unit also dispensed 700 Radioactive Iodine Treatments and performed more than 1550 CT scans.

“Statistics show that the Radiation Treatment Unit has maintained an occupancy rate of above 60 per cent over the past four and a half years,” said Ceylinco Healthcare Services Chairman R. Renganathan. “This fully justifies our investments to introduce the latest international standard technology for the treatment of cancer.”

He said CHSL would continue to expand its facilities, and plans to introduce more advanced radiation treatment equipment this year.

The Linear Accelerator installed at the Radiation Treatment Unit of the Ceylinco Healthcare Centre, located at the Park Street, Colombo 2, uses the latest computerised treatment planning systems. In addition, the Centre is equipped with a Brachytherapy machine, which delivers internal radiation, a 16 slice CT Simulator and a C-Arm x-ray machine.

In 2011, the Unit acquired a MapCHECK 2 two-Dimensional Diode Array, a sophisticated new device to further enhance its facilities for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). The new device verifies the accuracy of a dose of radiation before it is given to a patient.

The Unit enables patients to receive treatment for cancer in Sri Lanka with the support of their families in a comfortable, non-hospital atmosphere.

Established in collaboration with the world renowned Washington Hospital Centre, the Ceylinco Healthcare Centre which owns and operates the Radiation Treatment Unit, is a ground-breaking project of Ceylinco Healthcare Services Ltd., (CHSL) a subsidiary of Ceylinco Life, the country’s leading life insurer. The company also owns and manages the Ceylinco Diabetes Centre.
